In 1771, Fragonard was hired to paint a series of panels for the chateau at Louveciennes, the home of Madame du Barry. His theme was "The Progress of Love". The Lover Crowned is the companion piece to The Secret Meeting. The picture hangs in the Frick Collection, New York. The Progress of Love paintings (now in the Frick Collec tion, New York), commissioned by Mme du Barry but re turned to Fragonard after a 1773 dispute, were kept by the artist for many years in his Louvre apartment.
